Facebook’s sticking with free speech, Yahoo Group’s shutdown has UK telcos scrambling

Facebook is picking free speech in the political ads debate.

“I don’t think it’s right for a private company to censor politicians,” says Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Mark Zuckerberg says banning the political ads will hurt the up and comers as the incumbents then get the advantage as they are covered by the mainstream media.

But in reality, if you talk to anyone in the social media space, you can’t reach audiences organically anymore. You need to pay Facebook to distribute the content to newsfeeds.

Why is the closure of the Yahoo message boards causing the UK phone industry to panic?

Since 2002 the UK’s phone companies have used a Yahoo Group to share some rather critical information about phone numbers with each other.

When a block of 10,000 phone numbers is assigned to a telephone company by the government each telco needs to talk to each other to find out how to actually connect to those numbers.. and they do that via a Yahoo group.

This information actually allows the networks to connect to the right phone — like website addresses allow you to connect to a particular server — and even informs the network how much they should charge to connect to it.
